The United Kingdom’s Gambling Commission (BGC) has expressed support for newly established wagering restrictions on internet slot machines, yet it has also cautioned the government to exercise prudence during the rollout phase to prevent driving gamblers toward unregulated websites.

This action forms part of a broader initiative aimed at safeguarding young individuals, with the updated regulations establishing a ceiling on individual bets at £2 (approximately $2.50 USD) for those between the ages of 18 and 24. Individuals aged 25 and above will face a £5 cap, aligning online limitations with those in place at brick-and-mortar casinos.

These modifications come after a 10-week period of consultation during which a majority of participants voiced their approval for the implementation of obligatory restrictions on online slots as a means of mitigating gambling-related harm. Dugher warned that an oppressive or lopsided regulatory approach could drive consumers toward unsafe and unregulated digital black markets.

Data indicates that individuals between 18 and 24 are particularly susceptible to gambling-related harm, a primary reason for establishing reduced wager limitations. This demographic frequently possesses limited disposable funds, and their cognitive functions are still maturing, which, combined with typical life stressors, can elevate risk-taking tendencies and vulnerability.

Minister for Gambling Stuart Andrew underscored that while a large population gambles responsibly, evidence reveals a notably elevated problematic gambling incidence associated with internet-based slot amusements. He reiterated the apprehension for youthful individuals, stating that the white paper is committed to tackling both of these matters.

The wager restrictions will be implemented through supplementary legislation, affording operators an adjustment timeframe to guarantee adherence.
